The RGA™ is a proactive Lightning Protection Bonding for Floating Roof Tanks (FRT) to form part of a comprehensive Lightning Strike Protection for the facility. Through an appropriate number of RGAs installed, the risks of lightning related tank fires are substantially reduced. The RGA provides direct electrical bonding connection between the floating roof and the tank shell and outperforms other traditional bonding methods such as shunts, cables and staircase walkway.
In a study sponsored by 16 oil industry companies, it was found that 52 of 55 floating roof tank rim seal fires were caused by lightning. FRTs are especially vulnerable to the direct and indirect effects of lightning. A direct or a nearby lightning strike will cause electrical currents to flow across the tank shell and roof. When these lightning currents arc across the roof/shell interface, they can ignite any flammable vapors that may be present. It is therefore necessary to bond the roof and shell to prevent arcing at the roof-shell interface.
When the roof of the FRT is high, our bypass conductor is as short as possible to provide the lowest possible impedance between the roof and shell. When a typical floating roof tank is 80% full, the impedance of the RGA is lower than that of a traditional bypass conductor.
